These Are the Best Inventions of 2020

COVID-19 drastically changed the way we’ve lived in 2020. As TIME has just shared its best inventions of the year, the list further shows the undeniable impact the pandemic has had on much of the world.

Many of 2020’s most impressive inventions are a direct result of COVID-19, from technology that could accelerate a vaccine, to a portable hand-washing station. Numerous other inventions don’t necessarily address the virus directly, but are instead recognized as the pandemic has caused us to spend more time at home and subsequently, take up new hobbies.

Further proof that running has experienced a significant boom over the past year, Nike’s innovative Air Zoom Alphafly NEXT% has made TIME’s list of best inventions. The sneaker, worn by Eliud Kipchoge as he broke the two-hour marathon barrier, is designed specifically for long-distance racing, featuring two Zoom Air pods, ZoomX foam, and a carbon fiber plate that increases stiffness to add a sensation of propulsion.

The recently-released PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series S are featured on this year’s best inventions list as well, possibly pointing to the extra time spent indoors due to the pandemic.

Other notable entries include social simulation video game, Animal Crossing, Vollebak’s Full Metal Jacket, and the Allbirds Tree Dasher, a shoe made almost entirely from natural materials.

You can dive deeper into 2020’s best inventions, which were chosen by editors and correspondents from all around the world for originality, effectiveness, ambition, and impact, by visiting TIME.
