adidas recently announced a collaboration with one of the planet’s biggest film franchises — Star Wars. Comprising three separate drops, the first of the joint-effort project from the Three Stripes and the Disney-owned phenomenon comes in the form of basketball — and lightsaber-inspired — sneakers. The pack also includes junior editions, including the D.O.N. Issue #1 and the Dame 5.
Joining the powerful forces that are adidas’ basketball sneaker silhouettes with Star Wars characters and their lightsabers, the kicks pay homage to film favorites Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, among others. You’ll find all the details on the technical aspects of the four new sneakers, as well as what inspired them, below.
The classic Top Ten basketball silhouette first appeared two years after the very first Star Wars movie in 1979. Now, it gets an out-of-this-world rework, coming in a silver colorway with a lace badge inspired by the force. The silhouette was originally designed for the Top 10 NBA players, built with comfort and durability in mind.
From the light to the dark side, literally, the Crazy 1 Star Wars edition comes in a black and red colorway inspired by one of cinema’s greatest villains, Darth Vader. A UV midsole mimics the glow of a lightsaber, while reflective details on the upper complete this sinister sneaker.
Paying homage to Star Wars character Mace Windu, as well as NBA player James Harden, this is a sneaker inspred by the unique feel and style of lightsabers. (For the trivia heads — Mace Windu is in fact the only Star Wars characters to use a purple lightsaber, which was a request from Samuel L. Jackson.) Also packing a glowing UV midsole, this purple and black colorway comes covered in Aurebesh print — one of the galaxy’s writing systems.
Using Portland Trailblazer player Damian Lillard’s signature silhouette, the Dame 5 gets a Jedi-ready upgrade via a UV midsole and reflective upper. Inspired by the connection between the Jedi and lightsaber, the shoe also features Aurebesh symbols.
Continuing the red and black theme, this low silhouette is an ’80s basketball sneaker with a modern twist. Reminiscent of The Phantom Menace‘s Darth Maul, this is a vintage aesthetic sneaker with a dark difference.
