To honor the memory of Karl Lagerfeld, the iconic Chanel and Fendi creative director who died earlier this year, some of his famous friends have come together for “A Tribute to Karl: The White Shirt Project,” which reimagines Lagerfeld’s signature garment. The list of contributors includes Takashi Murakami, Kate Moss, Cara Delevingne, Amber Valletta, and Tommy Hilfiger.
“If you ask me what I’d most like to have invented in fashion, I’d say the white shirt. For me, the white shirt is the basis of everything. Everything else comes after,” Lagerfeld once said. As such, the designers, models, artists, and actors involved in the project will each design their own take on Lagerfeld’s beloved white shirt.
The shirts are a “unique and intimate way of relating back to Karl,” Pier Paolo Righi, CEO of the Karl Lagerfeld brand, told WWD. The designs will be displayed at an exhibition during Paris Fashion Week in September.
Lagerfeld’s affinity for the number seven will also be incorporated into the project. Seven of the final designs will be replicated 77 times and sold for €777 each. All proceeds from the sales will be donated to Sauver la Vie, a French charity that funds medical research at Paris Descartes University.
