Nike Is Making Stronger Pairs of Kyrie 4s for Zion Williamson

Future NBA lottery pick Zion Williamson made his return to the court last night following an injury presumably caused by a blown pair of sneakers. Weighing in at over 280 pounds, the freshman phenom ripped right through his Nike PG 2.5s less than one minute in to Duke’s first meeting against rival North Carolina last month. Zion then went on to miss five games due to a grade 1 MCL sprain.

Following the much-talked-about sneaker disaster, Nike reportedly flew a team of experts to Durham, North Carolina to meet with Williamson and Coach Mike Krzyzewski to determine what went wrong with the PG 2.5s and how they could build a sneaker better designed to handle Zion’s massive frame and explosive athleticism. After deliberation, all parties decided Williamson would wear a custom pair of the Kyrie 4.

Zion laced up his special Kyrie 4s for last night’s ACC Tournament game against Syracuse, and not only did the sneakers seemingly hold up well, but Williamson had an absolutely incredible outing, going a perfect 13-for-13 from the field, scoring 29 points in Duke’s victory. With the infamous sneaker blowout behind him, the ACC Player of the Year now sets his sights on an ACC Tournament Semifinal matchup against North Carolina.
