Vacations are happy occasions on any otherwise mundane calendar, but packing remains a minefield. Too small a vessel for your getaway wardrobe and you’ll likely rue the moment you decided not to pack that pair of sneakers. Too large? Well, you can bet that’ll come as an unnecessary annoyance when you’re lugging it through public transport from the airport.
We’ll leave the actual packing tips to folding maven Marie Kondo, but when it comes to knowing what bag to stick in the airport hold, there are a few rules to live by that are sure to save you some vacay stress.
Below, we’ve set some luggage guidelines in accordance with the length of any upcoming trips you have planned for 2019. Scroll on to bag some practical shopping advice to live by.
For short stays of only one or two days, anything more than a backpack is overkill. There’s a fine art to packing only what you need, and there’s no excuse for not planning your ’fits in advance of your short trip – one or two pair of kicks will suffice!
The below backpacks will more than do the job, with the added bonus of being a go-to day bag for when you need to lug laptops or gym kit around. Particular highlights include a 30L pack by and Wander that’s primed for adventure with its many external and internal pockets, a large, quilted nylon bag by Eastpak with steezy logo zipper, and a Master-Piece pack complete with branded metal hardware – now on sale with over $70 off.
Good long weekends start before you set off on your journey, with a steezy holdall. Suitcases remain on the extra side of the long weekend luggage options, but duffles and barrels are perfect for all your three to four day needs.
For those always on the go, an investment in a functional duffle from the likes of The North Face (its signature Base Camp is an obvious choice) or Stüssy will be a travel companion for years to come.
Those who have a bit more to invest in their trusty long weekend companion will get some serious points if the holdall comes in vintage Burberry check (peep the red leather accents!) or some super-sharp logo-embellished leather Gucci flex.
For stays that exceed five days, wheels are a must. Even Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson stops for some departure lounge shoulder respite when handling supplies for this amount of time. In recent times, though, suitcases have climbed the flex ladder, with the luggage belt one of the best places to stunt.
Virgil Abloh’s OFF-WHITE took things to a whole new level when he released a transparent collaboration with RIMOWA that put what’s inside your case at scrutiny too. The coveted four-wheeler (it’s 2019 and two wheels are the unicycles of the suitcase world, FYI) recently came back in stock at SSENSE in both clear white and black iterations. For messy packers, on the other hand, the iconic anodized aluminum case by RIMOWA looks sleek AF, is remarkably robust, and surprisingly lightweight.
