Editor’s Notes: Housed next to other prolific brands under the legendary roof of NEPENTHES, the Fall/Winter 2019 Engineered Garments collection is a highly-functional ensemble of military and safari references, bracketed by the usual overload of pockets. Influenced by American sportswear, outdoor clothing and uniforms, Engineered Garments has carved out a unique iteration of all of these, for an output that is unlike no other.

Taking inspiration from the New Romantic movement of the late ’70s, Daiki Suzuki teams flamboyant, tall hats (à la Boy George) with unadorned pieces like the tactical vest and corduroy blazer. The collection is timeless in more ways that one. In one sense of the word it is timeless in that it belongs to no singular period. Instead, Suzuki takes and borrows from 19th century New York, London’s bygone club scene, as well as more contemporary streetwear moments, inflected with clear Japanese design sensibilities.

The collection is timeless, also, thanks to its artistry. The combination of leopard print, corduroy, workwear and club aesthetic would suggest an eclectic, somewhat jarring collection – yet the FW19 presentation is anything but. Suzuki has once again delivered a beautifully coherent, supremely functional collection that is perfectly pitched for the new year.
