Following May’s announcement of the six winners, Nike now gives us a look at the contestants’ final sneaker designs from the 2018 On Air contest. The On Air program saw thousands of hopeful designers in New York City, London, Paris, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo submitting footwear concepts inspired by their community.
“There are attributes in the shoes this year that I would have never even considered, like introducing tools to encourage consumer modularity or pushing the boundaries of material usage,” says Dylan Raasch, Senior Creative Director of Nike Air Max. “These concepts prove that there are always new ways to approach design.”
Gabrielle Serrano’s Air Max 98 La Mezcla points to the diverse nature of NYC, combining race, ethnicity and cultural background, ultimately detailing what makes the city special.
Gwang Shin’s Air Max 97 Neon Seoul is a nod to his city’s neon signs, then featuring a matte black base, livened up with vibrant colors and contours inspired by the Taaeguk symbol on Seoul’s flag.
Jasmine Lasode’s Air Max 97 London Summer of Love serves as a celebration of summer in the city, more specifically referencing her first date on Primrose Hill.
Yuta Takuman’s Air Max 1 Tokyo Maze draws inspiration from Tokyo’s colorful tube lines that run beneath the city. The embossed leather signifies Tokyo’s concrete surface, while the red bubble represents the Tokyo Tower.
Lou Matheron’s Air VaporMax Plus Paris Works in Progress references photographs of a Parisian courthouse under construction. The colors and materials are reimagined from the job site.
Cash Ru’s Air Max 97 SH Kaleidoscope is an interpretation of what Cash sees when looking at Shanghai’s clouds as they shift and take on new forms.
