1 Granary, the magazine founded by former students of esteemed art and design school, Central Saint Martins, has positioned itself as a defining voice in fashion since launching back in 2012. During its intervening six years, the publication has transformed into a global fashion and art platform, drawing from the illustrious alum of Central Saint Martins, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, Parsons in New York, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp.
Despite its links to some of the world’s most acclaimed fashion universities, 1 Granary is interested in looking outside these revered boxes, most recently creating a platform that “unites and connects the prominent with the promising.” VOID, a project launched in 2017, supports young designers by introducing them to established names for unique and challenging collaborations. The project sees the traditional channels and avenues within the fashion ecosystem disrupted as young creatives realize their ideas with industry veterans and professional teams.

The concept is an accumulation of 1 Granary’s various projects including a magazine, a showroom, and most importantly, a network. Parallel to this, the project aims to address many of the challenges that young designers face in today’s competitive industry: replicating the operations of bigger brands, finding alternative ways to produce, presenting and selling fashion, maneuvering logistical concerns, and finding employment.

@simonungless doesn’t mince his words, especially when it comes to the topic of fashion education. As fame and celebrity are increasingly valued over raw skill, it is apparent that PR cannot provide the longevity young graduates require to sustain a brand. “I’ve been in education quite a long time now and I see the desperate need for change. We all teach the same thing. The outcome for design is still a fashion show and I’m not convinced that that process is serving the student. It’s preparing them for an industry that doesn’t exist.” The director of the @academyufashion in San Francisco wasn’t afraid to speak openly about the declining relevance of fashion universities (“A lot of schools are rapidly becoming dinosaurs. Do we need to exist anymore?”), the lack of research skills among his students (“They go to Pinterest and they feel that they have done research.”), or his time living and working with @alexandermcqueen (“I remember having Naomi Campbell in one of my jackets for Lee while we didn’t even have any milk in the fridge.”), which led to one of the most candid (and hilarious) interviews in @1granary history. For VOID Magazine Vol. 1, six established creative directors were invited to reinterpret the work of six emerging designers. The spotlighted designers include Gabriele Skucas, Rebecca Jefs, Charlotte Knowles, Sinéad O’Dwyer, Chopova Lowena, and 419 Collective. Each team worked to translate the universe of their process, resulting in six diverse, and above all original zines.
