When The Weeknd gets some downtime from his punishing world tour schedule, you can usually find him in a hotel room, lying stomach-down on the bed with his shoes kicked off, surrounded by minibar debris, watching episode after episode of Dragon Ball Z.
After midnight, he promises to tear himself away from the grainy stream and turn his computer off after the current episode finishes. But he does not. He cannot. Instead, he stays up all night, watching more and overloading his synapses with battle action, eventually falling asleep and dreaming about one day achieving Super Saiyan form. Upon waking, he’s distraught to discover that he, in fact, has no superhuman powers. He’s just The plain old Weeknd.
Okay, the above might not be entirely true, but there’s no doubting that Abel Tesfaye — like many of his peers — has a lot of time for the legendary Japanese series and anime culture generally. For proof, see his druggy 2011 track “Coming Down,” which samples a line from Japanese voice actor Ayako Kawasumi as Saber in Fate/Stay Night. Following that up was the kaleidoscopic, Japan-indebted video for “Kiss Land,” while his spot on the remix of Mike WiLL Made-It’s “Drinks on Us” saw him co-sign DBZ with the line, “And my hair be growing like a fuckin’ Saiyan.” (As someone who has only briefly flirted with Dragon Ball Z, I’m informed by a colleague that this lyric is erroneous, because a pure Saiyan cannot grow their hair. Duh.)
This week, the singer showcased his love for Dragon Ball Z once more, rocking a shirt bearing the famous “It’s over 9000!!!” catchphrase, as seen in the achingly wholesome photograph above. Unlike some of his usual high-end go-to brands — Dior, Tom Ford, Raf Simons, to name but a few — The Weeknd’s Dragon Ball Z shirt can be picked up for the affordable price of $20. Yes, $20! That’s way under 9,000 and about a quarter of what a ticket costs to see the man himself perform live.
And it’s not the only DBZ shirt Tesfaye has in his arsenal. Previously, he’s also flexed the blue banger below on Instagram Stories — a piece that can be picked up for a similar price everywhere from Walmart to Forever 21. Usually, though, these sell out fast, so be quick.
Having been tapped by BAPE in the past, 2018 promises to be big for Dragon Ball in fashion, with the adidas sneaker collaboration — one of the biggest drops of the year — arriving this month. As a global ambassador for PUMA, however, The Weeknd sadly won’t be getting his hands on a pair.
