Editor’s Notes: The original white/true red/black Nike Air Jordan XIII was the first sneaker to be released under the newly formed Jordan Brand back in 1997. Now, as part of Jordan Brand’s Fall 2018 lineup — which we previewed here — it’s making its comeback.
Inspired by black panthers and their leaping ability — which was likened to Michael Jordan’s aerial prowess on the court — the Air Jordan XIII features a cat eye motif on the heel and is regarded as one of the sleekest silhouettes from MJ’s signature line.
The sneaker made its way into popular culture when it appeared in 1998’s He Got Game, starring Ray Allen as Jesus Shuttlesworth and Denzel Washington as his father.
Shoutout to all the kids who have been asking me what movie this is 👊. I respect the honesty and the desire to understand the history behind sneaker culture. That is Denzel Washington (aka Jake Shuttleworth) trying out the Air Jordan 13 in the hit 1998 film ‘He Got Game,’ directed by Spike Lee. This classic sneaker returns on Saturday 🙌. The OG heads don’t like it when you call this shoe the “He Got Game” tho, so be careful 😄. Growing up, I just called it the Air Jordan 13, or the white/black/red 13. #mjmondays #airjordan13 #hegotgame #nikestories
Retailing at $190, be sure to pick up a pair via Nike and other select retailers.
Flip through the images above and look forward to the sneaker’s release date on August 4.
