Watch as Insane Laser Tech Distresses and Cuts Jeans in Seconds

The use of laser technology has become a more common and cleaner method of distressing jeans. Whereas the standard practice for producing distressed denim has been for textile workers to treat the fabric with chemicals and sandpaper, now companies have a faster, safer way of creating that final, worn-in look — and it has to be seen to be believed.

Instagram account @streetartglobe recently published the video below, which shows the fabric — with an outline sketched out already — placed under laser heat. As the beams hit the fabric, the dye burns out, causing a pale, distressed effect and marks. Not long after, an intense beam then cuts out the material along the outline, ready for stitching and assembly.

In March, Levi’s committed to replacing manual processing by workers with laser automation to reduce the use of harsh chemicals during manufacture by 2020. Similarly, G-Star RAW has employed laser technology as part of its sustainable denim project in partnership with Jaden Smith.
