Alexander McQueen’s Story Urged Kanye West to Open Up About Suicide

Alexander McQueen’s story, beyond his life as one of the world’s most revered fashion designers, was one underpinned by a series of tragic events that one day led him to take his own life. It was an event that shook the fashion community to its core, and subsequently caused many to talk more about suicide, and move it away from a topic of tabu.

Having drawn parallels to McQueen’s story and that of his own, it appears that Kanye West was moved by what he saw, ultimately leading him to confirm, albeit vaguely, that he too has battled with the preliminary stages of such a problem. The initial series of Tweets can be read below.

Despite moving swiftly to a Tweet led with the sentence, “How to NOT kill yourself pt 1,” West is yet to extend this so-called guide, which should understandably go far beyond a simple change in one’s friendship circle.

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, there are resources to help you. The National Suicide Prevention Lifeline provides 24/7, free and confidential support for people in distress, prevention and crisis resources for you or your loved ones. You can call directly at 1-800-273-8255. In the UK, you can contact Samaritans at 116 123.
