Young Japanese artist Doki Doki‘s new exhibition “DE-PORNED” finds the humor in pornography, sketching over risqué images with wacky cartoons. Having built a cult following for his playful style, which comes from an intention to purify intense images of pornography, Doki Doki’s work is now on display at Good Vibes Only in Hong Kong.

Doki Doki, whose name is taken from the Japanese expression for the sound of a beating heart, says his work is inspired by his school days, when he would cover his textbooks in doodles. This pattern continued into his teens, only by this time the doodles were being done on porn magazines he’d bought illicitly, in an attempt to make the mags’ discovery less shocking should his parents ever stumble upon them.

The title of this exhibition, “De-porned”, Doki Doki wants to use cartoons to purify the heavy images of pornography, so that it could reach an equilibrium of funny and erotic. Although porn is popular in Japan, it’s still taboo due to Japan’s highly conservative culture. The purpose of Doki Doki’s “DE-PORNED” exhibition is to bring a dash of humor to porn, reminding people that nakedness is not always erotic and that cartoons can dilute the pursuit of sexual desire.

The exhibition runs until 22 July and is open from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. every day except Monday. Adults only.
