The much-ridiculed statue of Cristiano Ronaldo at the airport on the soccer star’s home island of Madeira has been replaced, the BBC reports.

After the original bust of the Real Madrid and Portugal forward was revealed last year to commemorate Madeira Airport’s rebranding as Cristiano Ronaldo International Airport, sculptor Emanuel Santos described his work as “a matter of taste.” Now, after a year of mockery, it seems like taste has prevailed, with the airport finally deciding to switch the sculpture for something that somewhat resembles the player.
Here’s the new bust:
The statue of Cristiano Ronaldo at Madeira Airport has been replaced by a new bust. . . . . . #madeiraairport #cristianoronaldo #cristianoronaldo7 #cristianoronaldothebest #cristianoronaldobust #cristianoronaldostatue #soccer #portugal #sports #sportsvolt MS
The loss of the original, however, has not gone down well with some. A petition has been started calling for Madeira Airport to bring the OG Ronaldo-head back. Its disappearance is indeed a loss to meme-makers everywhere.
The switch happened the same day that Ronaldo produced one of the great World Cup performances, scoring a hat-trick against Spain in Portugal’s opening match.
