Forbes recently unveiled its annual list of the highest paid athletes. The 2018 edition sees last year’s top earner, Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo, displaced by Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather, who raked in $285 million in total earnings.
Mayweather didn’t even break the top 10 on 2017’s list, however, his earnings from the fight against UFC’s Conor McGregor have put him firmly in first place this year. Ronaldo falls to third, with $108 million in earnings, just $3 million short of eternal rival Lionel Messi.
Interestingly, even when combining Messi and Ronaldo’s earnings, the soccer stars still fall short of Mayweather’s total by over $60 million.
Rounding out the top five are Conor McGregor with $99 million and Brazil’s Neymar Jr., who brought in $90 million.
The earnings are calculated by combining endorsements and salary/winnings.
