Watch Kendrick Lamar Accept His Pulitzer Prize for ‘DAMN.’

Kendrick Lamar accepted the 2018 Pulitzer Prize for Music at Columbia University, New York, yesterday. The rapper was honored for his 2017 blockbuster DAMN., making it the first time in Pulitzer history that a non-classical artist or jazz musician has won.

Lamar, who sat next to CBS News anchor Gayle King during the ceremony, abstained from commenting when accepting his prize, but did make a brief comment during a Pulitzer Facebook Live video: “It’s an honor […] I’ve been writing my whole life, so to get this type of recognition — it’s beautiful.”

Prior to taking the stage, the presenter echoed the Pulitzer board’s original announcement about the win, calling the record, “a virtuosic song collection unified by its vernacular authenticity that offers affecting vignettes capturing the complexity of modern African-American life.”
