The Drip | Donald Glover Shows How to Wear the Brand, Not Let the Brand Wear You

The Drip is Highsnobiety’s latest series, taking a deep-dive look at celebrities and their jawnz. Every other day, we highlight a notable figure from our world and run the rule over whether their outfit is a hit or miss. Do you agree or disagree with our appraisal? Let us know below.

Who: Donald Glover aka Childish Gambino

The outfit: Gucci leather loafers with House Web and GG detail, Gucci x Dapper Dan V-neck sweater with GG print, and Gucci pre-fall 2018 two button notch lapel Heritage suit

Location: Solo: A Star Wars Story premiere in New York City

Why it works: Here, Donald Glover expertly throws it back to the ’70s by combining a brown suit – one of the hardest colors pull off – and a pair of timeless leather Gucci loafers, with the centerpiece of the ’fit: a knitted V-neck GG print sweater from Dapper Dan’s recent collaborative collection. In doing so, and in matching varying shades of brown, the actor creates a cohesive outfit that stands out but doesn’t dominate – something that is difficult to achieve when clad head-to-toe in Gucci. Glover perfectly balances the loud with the reserved, achieving a timelessly retro look in the process.

Editor’s Notes: This isn’t the first time Glover has stepped out in predominantly Gucci. He wore a purple Gucci suit at the Met Gala 2018 and was rocking head-to-toe Gucci at the fashion house’s Cruise 2018 presentation last year. In fact, Glover’s penchant for wearing Gucci is becoming such a habit that it wouldn’t be a stretch to call the creative one of the label’s biggest and most important ambassadors.

While Gucci’s louder pieces, such as their tracksuits and embroidered outerwear, have been spotted on the likes of A$AP Rocky, John Mayer, and Jared Leto, Glover plays an essential role in balancing Gucci’s brand image and giving their “less gaudy” pieces a wider platform to shine. We might be going out on a limb here by saying that Donald Glover’s consistently on-point Gucci ’fits are a big reason why Gucci isn’t put in the same category as Versace, for example.

Most things Donald Glover touch turn to gold; whether that be his socially-conscious music video for “This Is America,” his cameo as Lando in the new Star Wars movie, or his penchant for dressing well and getting off a ’fit. His latest appearance is no different and proves that it is possible to wear a brand, without it wearing you. Jared Leto, take note.
