After being teased via a C.P. Company collaboration in January, the adiads Kamanda finally released last weekend. Fully decked in modern design elements, this model is progressive in terms of its performance and aesthetic, packing nods to 1980s soccer culture.

You may still be wondering, however, how the name Kamanda was coined in the first place. Highsnobiety talked to the sneaker’s designer, Remy Eyraud, who tells us: “We took inspiration from the Samba’s tooling, and more specifically the pattern from the bottom that is used all over the tooling on the Kamanda. We’ve been using semi-translucent gum rubber to match with the Samba, and refer back to the terrace roots of the shoe.”

adidas Product Manager Christopher Wheat continues: “The reality here is that naming becomes harder and harder, there are all-too-often a whole host of legal issues around using the names you start out with.”

Adidas Consortium debuts their latest football-inspired silhouette, the Kamanda. The uppers are draped in buttery suede and sit atop a sculpted gumsole. You can pick up a pair come April 28th for €150. Would you cop the black or the burgundy pair? 📷: @solebox #hskicks

Of course, the same was the case with Kamanda. Wheat went on to say: “[There was] no exception here, the shoe started its life under the working title Team Indoor, with the idea to embrace that message of a group, collective or team that was very much a part of the casual movement who went on to adopt the original City Series in such a big way.”

“One legal review later and the working title was out the window. The team explored countless other names that could still capture this feeling of a team or squad, one suggestion was to use the Russian spelling of team – Komanda (команда). Somehow, when this was sent for approval there was a bit of a spelling mistake. Approval was granted and the KAMANDA was born.”

The KAMANDA silhouette, in all its Russian squad goal glory, is available to cop now in two colorways — black and red — for $150.
