Key Pieces: the velvet bomber is definitely a standout piece, but the seamless workout set will get you excited to hit the gym.
Editor’s Notes: KCA-LAB are making what they call “real athleisure.” Founded by three sisters (Kathrin, Charlotte and Amelie Freier whose initials make up the brand’s name), the recently-launched label is making sportswear that won’t look out of place outside of the gym.
“We want to create something we would actually wear outside, something that’s not screaming sportswear,” the brand’s Global Product Director (and former adidas designer) Schmidt explains.
“Of course, we could have done bold branding — the typical sports DNA — but when designing we were thinking of women and asked ourselves “who wants to be a walking billboard?”
Instead, KCA-LAB kept it simple and wearable. There’s enough visual interest to make the clothes actually motivate you to hit the gym, while the designs are subtle enough to wear outside. “That’s real athleisure, when you consider where logos are placed, how logos are used, what colors would you wear,” Schmidt says.
But, of course, sportswear isn’t just about looking good — it also has to perform. “With athleisure, so many people think that you can either approach it from a fashion side, or approach it from a sports side, but for us, athleisure means that you can keep your options open,” Schmidt affirms.
Basically, the brand’s ethos is to produce sportswear that performs well and looks good. To do this, the Freier sisters used compression fabric to support the body, alongside materials that wick away moisture and offer breathability — and of course, ensuring that everything could easily transition from the gym to your everyday life.
