A$AP Rocky is back. As he gears up for the release of his forthcoming album, the Harlem rapper returned last week with a dizzying, Dexter Navy-directed music video for “A$AP Forever”: a new track featuring an extensive sample of Moby’s “Porcelain”.
While any new music from Rocky is most welcome, fashion observers and style vultures were more intrigued to see what Flacko was wearing throughout the cut. Unsurprisingly, the footage flagged up an abundance of hyped jawnz and grails, with Alexander Wang, AWGE, Midnight Studios, and of course, Raf Simons, just some of the labels on display.
Enlisting the help of Highsnobiety commerce curator and veritable style encyclopedia Nigel Minani, I set about breaking down Rocky and friends’ ‘fits. Peep the list below and let us know your favorite pieces.
Rocky displays his eclectic taste in footwear throughout the video, most notably with J.W Anderson’s glittery take on the iconic Converse Chuck All-Star which released last year. He isn’t the first hip-hop star to rock these, with Frank Ocean notably performing in them at FYF Fest.
Rocky might be a multi-millionaire with carte-blanche access to just about every fashion brand on the planet, but that doesn’t mean he’s a snob. Nope, Flacko knows a classic when he sees one, as evidenced by his choice to pair up the classic Nike Air Force 1 07 LV8 High with a distressed Canadian tux.
Look! It’s Playboi Carti! And he’s wearing (the slightly hyped these days) Vetements and a Raf Simons cap! The AWGE signee is seen here alongside Rocky, who himself creeps into shot fronting in a trucker cap from the creative collective’s apparel arm.
Rocky and the A$AP crew’s love of Sean Wotherspoon’s Round Two is well documented: in this shot, he’s wearing a vintage hip-hop tee that was possibly copped from the LA vintage boutique. Additionally, those Vans Old Skools you see in shot on the feet of A$AP TyY are from hyped LA label mindseeker, and have previously been worn by Flacko himself.
This rare “God Save the Rave” hoodie from AWGE and Shane Gonzales’ Midnight Studios dropped as a ComplexCon exclusive. Of course, it sold out. But it can be yours if you’re willing to spend that bit extra over at Grailed.
This VLONE denim jacket dropped in a variety of colors with a price tag of $550 — it sold out in every size.
Rocky’s next jacket is a heavy duty shearling banger from Alexander Wang which, prior to selling out, was available to cop at the discounted price at $900. As indicated by the red zip-tie tag, the boots are from Virgil Abloh’s OFF-WHITE.
For those in the dark, KAPITAL is a Japanese brand that started out as a denim manufacturer before branching out. Mixing Americana and retro Japanese aesthetics in a similar vein to visvim or Junya Wantanabe (which also makes it a favorite of John Mayer’s, duh), the label has become a pillar of Japanese menswear. It’s hard to make this one out properly, but, we think it’s similar to this.
Okay, so these might not be exact Osiris D3s, but they do bear remarkable similarities to the bulky ’00 kicks. Rocky previously showcased the mysterious shoes, which feature a crazy hang tag, on Instagram. Might they be related to his much-publicized deal with Under Armour? Or even an upcoming collab with Osiris? Get a better look here.
Did you really expect to get to the end of an A$AP Rocky fashion article without at least one mention of Keizo Shimizu’s Needles? As the first half of the video approaches its denoument, he can be seen in a one-of-one 7 Cut T-shirt. For something similar, head over to Goodhood, and then revisit his own collaboration with the brand here.
Given Rocky once wrote a paean to Raf Simons called “RAF”, the Belgian designer was another dead cert thing to crop up in the list. The “American Recycling” T-shirt is a vintage effort from Raf in 2002 and you can see it more clearly here. The shearling parka, meanwhile, we think is Calvin Klein, and could have been personalized on the inside by Raf exclusively for Rocky.
Last but not least, we get to Rocky’s custom himumimdead jumpsuit, which he was also seen performing in during a bewitching performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. For the uninitiated, the scribble-heavy label is the brainchild of Australian artist Pauly Bonomelli, and has also been worn by Kanye West in the past. Click here to find out more.
Now peep some of Lil Uzi Vert’s recent wild ‘fits.
