Facebook’s New Feature Will Allow Users to Delete Messages

Facebook is planning to implement a new feature that will allow users to unsend messages.

The news comes in light of the ongoing Cambridge Analytica scandal. Recently, users who had been in contact with Mark Zuckerberg and other executives via Facebook noted how some messages had been removed from their chat history.

While Facebook currently offers a secret encryption messaging tool that features an unsend expiration timer (more on that here), the app does not allow the option of unsending messages.

In a recent statement, the company apologized for the lack of transparency and revealed plans to roll out its new “delete message” in the following months.

“We have discussed this feature several times,” A Facebook spokesperson told TechCrunch. “And people using our secret message feature in the encrypted version of Messenger have the ability to set a timer — and have their messages automatically deleted

“We will now be making a broader delete message feature available. This may take some time. And until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executives’ messages. We should have done this sooner — and we’re sorry that we did not.”
